Zabriskie Point
Italian master Michelangelo Antonioni, who won top prizes at all three major film festivals (Berlin, Venice, Cannes) in the 1960s, made this film after moving to America in 1970. Set in Los Angeles and Death Valley, it depicts the psychological landscape of love between a man and a woman. In the late 1960s, amidst the peak of counterculture, with university protests raging and students clashing with armed police, Mark grows tired of futile debates at student gatherings. He grabs a gun and confronts the police officers cracking down on campus, but misses his chance to fire and flees. He then steals a Cessna at an airfield and takes to the sky. Meanwhile, Daria, a secretary at a Los Angeles real estate company, is driving across the vast desert to attend a meeting. The two meet by chance and arrive at Zabriskie Point, overlooking Death Valley... The leads are newcomers Mark Frechette and Daria Halprin, whom Antonioni scouted on the streets. The soundtrack effectively features music by Pink Floyd, Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead, Kaleidoscope, John Fahey, The Rolling Stones, and The Youngbloods. Released in Japan in 1970, it also had a late-show release in 1996. A revival release is scheduled for 2026, the first in 30 years.
