ニューヨークのトッテン財団では、8人の学者たちによる百科事典の編纂が大詰めを迎えていたが、文法学者のポッツ教授がある俗語を耳にしたことから、これまでの努力が世間から隔絶していたことに気づき、街へ調査に出かける。そこで出会ったナイトクラブの歌姫、オシェイに協力を求めるが……。公開当時、アメリカでヒットしたものの、時代の影響で輸入されなかった。ビリー・ワイルダーはホークス演出の見学許可を条件に脚本に参加。翌年には監督デビューしており、これに備えての勉強だったという。

At the Totten Foundation in New York, eight scholars are putting the finishing touches on an encyclopedia, but when grammar professor Potts overhears a slang term, he realizes their work has been isolated from the real world and ventures into the city to investigate. There, he seeks the help of O'Shea, a nightclub singer... Although the film was a hit in the U.S. upon release, it was never imported due to the times. Billy Wilder contributed to the script on the condition that he be allowed to observe Hawks' direction. He made his directorial debut the following year, having used this as preparation.
