「イニスフリー」などのドキュメンタリーで注目を集めたスペインの俊英ホセ・ルイス・ゲリン監督が2007年に発表した長編劇映画。フランスの古都ストラスブールを舞台に、かつて出会った女性の面影を追い求める青年が街をさまよう姿を、緻密で独特な映像表現で描いた。 ヨーロッパの古都にあるホテルの一室で目覚めた画家志望の青年は、街のカフェで、かつてバーで会ったことのある美しい女性シルビアの姿を見つける。青年はそのシルビアと思しき女性を追いかけ、街中をさまよい歩くが……。 2007年・第64回ベネチア国際映画祭コンペティション部門に出品されたほか、2008年・第20回東京国際映画祭をはじめ各国で上映されて高い評価を獲得。「ミツバチのささやき」「エル・スール」で知られるスペインの名匠ビクトル・エリセが、ゲリンを「現代スペインで最も優れた映画作家」と称賛したことでも知られる。

This film follows a young aspiring painter wandering through places of memory, searching for traces of Sylvia, a woman he loved six years ago. It constructs an obsessive love story reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock's 'Vertigo' (1958) with meticulously calculated sound and imagery, resulting in a groundbreaking work unlike anything seen before. The film was shot entirely on location in Strasbourg, France, an ancient city where medieval streetscapes and cutting-edge railways coexist without dissonance, creating a stateless atmosphere. The masterful sound design, which orchestrates the city's noises—the murmur of people, the passing of trams—like a symphony, and the beautiful, luminous chain of images captured through glass reflections and tram windows, transport the viewer into an unknown, otherworldly space.
