ヌーベルバーグの旗手であり、サスペンスやミステリーの名作を数多く残したフランスのクロード・シャブロル監督が、のどかな田舎の村を舞台に描く犯罪ドラマ。孤独な肉屋が引き起こした連続殺人事件と、彼に愛された女教師の姿を通して、人間精神の闇を静かに、鋭く描き出す。 フランス南西部の小さな村で小学校の教師を務めるエレーヌは、戦争からの帰還兵で孤独を抱えたポールと知り合い、次第に親しくなる。一方、村では女性の連続殺人事件が起こり、穏やかな日常が乱れていく。ある日、生徒たちとピクニックに出かけたエレーヌは惨殺死体を発見するが、その傍らに落ちていたライターは、エレーヌがポールにプレゼントしたものとそっくりだった。 当時シャブロルと結婚していたステファーヌ・オードランが主演を務め、「不貞の女」と同じエレーヌという役名の女性を演じた。肉屋のポールをジャン・ヤンヌが演じる。日本では劇場未公開だったが、1960年代後半から70年に発表されたシャブロルのサスペンス3本をラインナップした「クロード・シャブロル傑作選」（2026年2月13日からシネマリス、Morc阿佐ヶ谷ほか）にて日本劇場初公開。

Directed by Claude Chabrol, a leading figure of the French New Wave known for numerous suspense and mystery masterpieces, this crime drama is set in a peaceful rural village. It quietly and sharply delves into the darkness of the human psyche through a series of murders committed by a lonely butcher and the female teacher who is loved by him. Hélène, a primary school teacher in a small village in southwestern France, meets Paul, a war veteran burdened with loneliness, and they gradually grow close. Meanwhile, a series of murders of women shakes the village's calm daily life. One day, during a picnic with her students, Hélène discovers a brutally murdered body; beside it lies a lighter identical to one she had given Paul. Stéphane Audran, who was married to Chabrol at the time, stars as Hélène, the same character name as in 'Les Biches'. Jean Yanne plays the butcher Paul. Although never theatrically released in Japan, the film will have its Japanese theatrical premiere as part of the 'Claude Chabrol Masterpiece Selection' (starting February 13, 2026, at Cinema Rise and Morc Asagaya, among others), featuring three of Chabrol's suspense films from the late 1960s to 1970.
