「オールド・ボーイ」のパク・チャヌク監督が、イギリスの人気ミステリー作家サラ・ウォーターズの小説「荊の城」を原案に、物語の舞台を日本統治下の韓国に置きかえて描いたサスペンスドラマ。1930年代、日本統治下の韓国。スラム街で詐欺グループに育てられた少女スッキは、藤原伯爵と呼ばれる詐欺師から、ある計画を持ちかけられる。それは、莫大な財産の相続権を持つ令嬢・秀子を誘惑して結婚した後、精神病院に入れて財産を奪い取ろうというものだった。計画に加担することにしたスッキは、人里離れた土地に建つ屋敷で、日本文化に傾倒した支配的な叔父の上月と暮らす秀子のもとで、珠子という名のメイドとして働きはじめる。しかし、献身的なスッキに秀子が少しずつ心を開くようになり、スッキもまた、だます相手のはずの秀子に心惹かれていき……。秀子役を「泣く男」のキム・ミニが務め、スッキ役は無名の新人女優キム・テリをオーディションで抜擢。伯爵役は「チェイサー」のハ・ジョンウ、秀子の叔父・上月役は「最後まで行く」のチョ・ジヌンがそれぞれ演じた。

Directed by Park Chan-wook of 'Oldboy' fame, this suspense drama is based on Sarah Waters' novel 'Fingersmith' but transposed to 1930s Japanese-occupied Korea. Sook-hee, a girl raised by a gang of swindlers in a slum, is approached by a con man known as Count Fujiwara with a plan: seduce Lady Hideko, an heiress to a vast fortune, marry her, then commit her to an asylum and steal her wealth. Agreeing to take part, Sook-hee begins working as a maid named Ok-ju at a remote mansion where Hideko lives with her domineering, Japanophile uncle Kouzuki. But as devoted Sook-hee gradually opens Hideko's heart, Sook-hee herself finds herself drawn to the woman she is supposed to betray. Kim Min-hee plays Hideko, while newcomer Kim Tae-ri was cast as Sook-hee through auditions. Ha Jung-woo plays the Count, and Cho Jin-woong plays Uncle Kouzuki.
