プッチーニのオペラ「ラ・ボエーム」で有名な、アンリ・ミュルジェールによる小説を、フィンランドのアキ・カウリスマキ監督が”原作を台無しにしたプッチーニへの復讐をこめて”映画化。舞台はパリ。アルバニア出身の画家ロドルフォは、家賃滞納でアパートを追い出された作家マルセルと出会い意気投合。2人はマルセルの部屋へ向かうが、そこにはすでに新しい住人の音楽家ショナールが入居していた。3人は共同生活を始めるが……。
Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki adapts Henri Murger's novel—famous as the source of Puccini's opera "La Bohème"—into a film "with a vengeance against Puccini for ruining the original." Set in Paris. Rodolfo, a painter from Albania, meets Marcel, a writer who has been evicted from his apartment for unpaid rent, and the two hit it off. They head to Marcel's room, but a new tenant, the musician Schaunard, has already moved in. The three begin living together, but...
