Cruising
A crime suspense film directed by William Friedkin, who won an Academy Award for "The French Connection" and had a worldwide hit with "The Exorcist," released in 1980, set against the backdrop of New York City's underground gay culture at the time. A series of murders targeting only gay men occurs in New York at night. Police detective Burns, given a secret mission, goes undercover in S&M clubs frequented by gay men, pretending to be homosexual. Wandering the depths of male sexuality night after night, Burns wears himself down both physically and mentally, finally finding a clue to the killer... Based on actual murders of gay men that occurred between 1973 and 1979, Friedkin wrote the script after experiences including meeting with a suspect who had also appeared in "The Exorcist." Considered the first Hollywood film to openly depict male same-sex S&M sex, it faced protests from the time of its announcement through its release for allegedly promoting homophobia, and was not a commercial success. However, since the 2000s, it has been re-evaluated as a valuable record of gay culture before the global spread of HIV.
