This adaptation of the same-named period novel by Otaguro Mikami was scripted by Daisuke Ito and Teinosuke Kinugasa, with a screenplay by Natsuto Wada, and directed by Kon Ichikawa. Kazuo Hasegawa, who starred in the 1935 version, again plays the dual roles of Yukinojo Nakamura and Yami Taro. The cast also includes Fujiko Yamamoto, Ayako Wakao, Raizo Ichikawa, and Shintaro Katsu, among other luminaries. This film commemorates Hasegawa's 300th appearance. In Edo, Yukinojo Nakamura, a female-role actor of Kamigata kabuki performing in the city, spots Sanzai Tsuchibe and Kaimiya, the men who framed his father on false charges and drove him to suicide. Sanzai's daughter, Namiji, falls in love with Yukinojo, and he uses her to avenge his father. Kawaguchiya, who had been hoarding rice during the Edo famine, is thwarted by Kaimiya—instigated by Yukinojo—and goes bankrupt, after which Kaimiya sets fire to his shop. Enraged, Kaimiya strangles Kawaguchiya but is stabbed by Namiji, whom he had tried to abduct.
