From naval academy to the skies of the South Seas, and now having survived to set foot on his homeland's soil, Reikichi's only thought has been his beloved Michiko. Through rumors, he heard she had lost her husband to death and moved to Tokyo. Reikichi moves to Tokyo and stays in the apartment of his younger brother Yo, a book broker, and while working as a ghostwriter of love letters for mistresses through the help of his war comrade Yamaji, he searches for Michiko's whereabouts. The day that compressed five years into an instant finally arrives. Michiko comes to him to request ghostwriting of a love letter, just like any other 'panpan' girl. Reikichi, who had cherished the image of pure Michiko, lashes out with harsh words at the Michiko before him. From then on, Reikichi spends days of drunken agony torn between love and hatred for Michiko. Yo, who vaguely senses his brother's feelings, consults Yamaji and meets Michiko. After her husband's death in the war, unable to stay in her stepmother's home, she worked with the occupation forces in Yokohama, and out of loneliness began living with a kind foreign officer—but she was not living a dissolute life like so-called 'panpan' girls, and had since parted with that officer. Yo and Yamaji arrange for Michiko and Reikichi to meet, but Reikichi refuses. Knowing Reikichi's heart that will not forgive her, Michiko throws herself into oncoming traffic amid tangled headlights. Told by police of her serious injury, Reikichi realizes that regardless of her past mistakes, she is precious to him. In the car racing to the hospital, Reikichi sobs and prays to God for Michiko's life.
