ジャン＝リュック・ゴダールの初長編監督作。即興演出や手持ちカメラでの街頭撮影など、当時の劇場映画の概念を打ち破る技法で製作され、後の映画界に大きな影響を与えた、ヌーベルバーグの記念碑的作品。原案はフランソワ・トリュフォー、テクニカルアドバイザーとしてクロード・シャブロルも参加している。 警官を殺してパリに逃げてきた自動車泥棒のミシェルは、新聞売りのアメリカ留学生パトリシアとの自由な関係を楽しんでいた。パトリシアはミシェルの愛を確かめるために、彼の居場所を警察に伝え、そのことをミシェルにも教えるが……。 2016年にデジタルリマスター＆寺尾次郎氏による新訳版が公開。2022年には、公開60周年を記念してつくられた4Kレストア版で公開。2026年にも、「勝手にしやがれ」制作過程を描いたリチャード・リンクレイター監督作「ヌーヴェルヴァーグ」の公開にあわせて、4Kレストア版でリバイバル公開。

Jean-Luc Godard's first feature-length directorial work. Produced with techniques that broke the conventions of theatrical cinema at the time, such as improvisational direction and handheld street shooting, it is a landmark film of the French New Wave that greatly influenced the later film industry. The original idea was by François Truffaut, and Claude Chabrol also participated as a technical advisor. Michel, a car thief who kills a policeman and flees to Paris, enjoys a free relationship with Patricia, an American student selling newspapers. To test Michel's love, Patricia informs the police of his whereabouts and tells Michel what she has done... A digitally remastered version with a new translation by Jiro Terao was released in 2016. In 2022, a 4K restored version created to commemorate the 60th anniversary of its release was shown. In 2026, a 4K restored version will be revived in conjunction with the release of Richard Linklater's film 'Nouvelle Vague,' which depicts the production process of 'Breathless.'
