Like Grains of Sand
[Reason for selecting this work] I watched this in my early twenties and felt it was the film I had been searching for throughout my teens. A portrait of high school classmates' youth. There's Ito-kun, who is gay; Yoshida-kun, whom Ito loves; the honor student dating Yoshida; the joking classmates; and the transfer student Aihara who pals around with no one. I truly love the slightly secretive boy-girl friendship between Ito-kun, played by Okada Yoshinori, and Aihara, played by Hamasaki Ayumi before her DIVA debut—two lonely souls. Youth says one word too many, youth falls one word short, youth can never convey everything to anyone. Whether it's the classroom where hearts and bodies gathered, the tension of being alone together, or the sense of liberation just between the two of them, it's all burned into the frame as if summer itself were the camera capturing them. It's not cool—it's something more.
