A massacre occurs deep in the Tohoku mountains, killing most of a village's residents. A self-defense force special unit member, Misawa, who was training in the mountains, happens upon the scene, kills the perpetrator, and rescues the sole survivor—a village girl named Yoriko. Later, after retiring, Misawa adopts Yoriko and works as an insurance salesperson. One day, he rescues a female journalist named Tomoko from an attacker, but she is being targeted because she tried to expose the corruption of a local businessman, Oba. Meanwhile, Detective Kitano, who suspects Misawa of being the massacre killer, continues to shadow him.
