詩人・作家・映画監督として活躍したイタリアの異才ピエル・パオロ・パゾリーニが、20世紀を代表するソプラノ歌手マリア・カラスを主演に迎え、ギリシャ悲劇「メディア」を映像化した作品。イオルコス国王の遺児イアソンは、父の王位を奪った叔父ペリアスに王位返還を求める。ペリアスはその条件として、未開の国コルキスにある「金の羊皮」を手に入れるよう要求。旅に出たイアソンは、コルキス国王の娘メディアの心を射止め金の羊皮を持ち帰る。しかし王位返還の約束は反故にされ、イアソンはメディアと共に隣国コリントスへ向かう。そこで国王に見込まれたイアソンは、メディアを捨てて国王の娘と婚約。裏切られたメディアは復讐を決意する。2022年3月には、特集企画「パゾリーニ・フィルム・スペシャーレ1＆2」（ヒューマントラストシネマ有楽町、新宿武蔵野館ほか）にてリバイバル上映。

Directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini, the Italian polymath known as a poet, writer, and filmmaker, this film adapts the Greek tragedy 'Medea' starring Maria Callas, the iconic 20th-century soprano. Jason, the orphaned son of the King of Iolcus, demands the return of the throne from his uncle Pelias, who usurped it. Pelias sets the condition that Jason must retrieve the Golden Fleece from the barbaric land of Colchis. On his journey, Jason wins the heart of Medea, the daughter of the King of Colchis, and brings back the fleece. However, the promise of the throne is broken, and Jason flees with Medea to neighboring Corinth. There, favored by the king, Jason abandons Medea and becomes engaged to the king's daughter. Betrayed, Medea vows revenge. In March 2022, the film had a revival screening as part of the special program 'Pasolini Film Speciale 1 & 2' (at Human Trust Cinema Yurakucho, Shinjuku Musashino Hall, and others).
