「牯嶺街少年殺人事件」「カップルズ」などで知られる台湾ニューシネマの名匠エドワード・ヤンが、台北に暮らす5人家族にそれぞれ訪れる人生の変化を静かに見つめ、2000年・第53回カンヌ国際映画祭で監督賞を受賞した家族ドラマ。 小学生のヤンヤンは、コンピュータ会社を経営する父NJと母ミンミン、高校生の姉ティンティン、優しい祖母と一緒に、高級マンションで何不自由ない生活を送っている。幸せを絵に描いたような家族だったが、母の弟の結婚式を境にさまざまなトラブルに見舞われる。祖母は脳卒中で昏睡状態となり、父は初恋の人に再会して心揺らぎ、母は新興宗教に救いを求める。父は倒産の危機に陥った会社の経営を立て直すため、天才的ゲームデザイナーの大田と契約するため日本へ旅立つ。一方、姉は隣人リーリーのボーイフレンドと付き合いはじめるが……。 イッセー尾形がゲームデザイナーの大田役で出演。ヤン監督は2007年に逝去したため、彼が最後に完成させた長編映画となった。2025年・第78回カンヌ国際映画祭カンヌクラシック部門のオープニング作品として4Kレストア版が上映された。

A family drama by Edward Yang, the master of Taiwanese New Cinema known for 'A Brighter Summer Day' and 'The Terrorizers,' which quietly observes the life changes that befall each member of a five-person family living in Taipei. Yang won the Best Director award at the 53rd Cannes Film Festival in 2000 for this film. Elementary school student Yang-yang lives a comfortable life in a luxury apartment with his father NJ, who runs a computer company, his mother Min-min, his high school sister Ting-ting, and his gentle grandmother. They seem like a picture-perfect happy family, but troubles begin after the wedding of the mother's younger brother. The grandmother falls into a coma from a stroke, the father is shaken by a reunion with his first love, and the mother seeks solace in a new religion. To save his company from bankruptcy, the father travels to Japan to secure a contract with a genius game designer named Ota. Meanwhile, the sister starts dating the boyfriend of her neighbor Li-li... Issey Ogata appears as the game designer Ota. As director Yang passed away in 2007, this became his final completed feature film. A 4K restoration was screened as the opening film of the Cannes Classics section at the 78th Cannes Film Festival in 2025.
