ビリー・ワイルダーが長年の脚本パートナーであったチャールズ・ブラケットと離れ、新たな脚本家を迎えた作品。ニューヨークの新聞社から閉め出されたジャックは、洞窟内で生き埋めになっている男を目撃する。是が非でも一流紙に戻りたい彼は、スクープを利用し情報操作に手を染める。おのれの野心のためなら手段を選ばない新聞記者が、世論に裁かれる姿は見応え十分。世間の評価が芳しくなかったため、スタジオ側が「Ace in the Hall」から「The Big Carnival」にタイトルを変更したという逸話も。

Billy Wilder parted ways with his long-time screenwriting partner Charles Brackett and brought in a new writer for this film. Jack, kicked out of a New York newspaper, witnesses a man buried alive in a cave. Desperate to return to a top-tier paper, he manipulates information using the scoop. A journalist who stops at nothing for his own ambition is ultimately judged by public opinion, making for a compelling watch. There is also an anecdote that the studio changed the title from 'Ace in the Hole' to 'The Big Carnival' due to poor public reception.
