The Breakfast Club

A coming-of-age ensemble drama directed in 1985 by John Hughes, known as the screenwriter of "Home Alone" and as a director of such excellent youth films as "Sixteen Candles" and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," marking his second directorial effort. On a Saturday morning, five high school students who have each gotten into trouble are gathered in the library and ordered to write an essay on the theme of "what is life" by the end of the day. The five, who had no prior connection, share a tense atmosphere, but through their common resentment toward parents, teachers, and adults, they gradually open up their hearts. The film resonated with audiences for its realistic characters—far from the carefree, fleeting figures typical of youth films up to that point—and widely introduced the world to America's "school caste" system, in which students distance themselves through mockery and contempt. The charm of its fresh cast, including Molly Ringwald in her second collaboration with director Hughes after "Sixteen Candles," is another highlight.
