This animation was planned following the panda boom in Japan sparked by China's gift of pandas to Ueno Zoo in 1972 as part of Japan-China friendship. Mimiko sends her grandmother off to a memorial service and will be living alone for a while. But when she returns home, there is a child panda who understands human speech. Then the father panda also appears. This panda father and child were lured by the bamboo grove near Mimiko's home. Mimiko treats the father panda, Papanda, as her own father and the child panda, Pan, as her child, and begins living together with them. One day, a policeman visiting Mimiko's house is startled to see the panda pair. In fact, Papanda and Pan had escaped from the zoo. The zoo director, alerted by the police, tries to take them back, but Pan gets lost, and a search begins. Pan is found swept away in a river, with a sluice-gate waterfall beyond—a major crisis. Can they rescue Pan? And can Mimiko and the panda pair live together again?
