「ラルジャン」「スリ」「ジャンヌ・ダルク裁判」などで知られる名匠ロベール・ブレッソン監督が1966年に手がけた長編7作目。文豪ドストエフスキーによる「白痴」の挿話から着想を得て、一匹のロバとひとりの少女の数奇な運命を描き出した。 ピレネーの小さな村に住む幼い少女マリーは、生まれたばかりのロバにバルタザールと名付けてかわいがっていた。10年後、バルタザールは鍛冶屋の苦役に使われていたが、その苦しさに耐えかねて逃げ出し、マリーのもとへと向かう。成長したマリーは再会を喜び、バルタザールを連れて歩くが、彼女に思いを寄せるジェラールは嫉妬し、バルタザールを痛めつける。物言わぬロバの視点を通して人間の愚かさや醜さを淡々と描き、ベネチア国際映画祭で審査委員特別賞を受賞するなど傑作として知られる。 主演は、後に「中国女」をはじめゴダール作品に多く出演することになるアンヌ・ビアゼムスキーで、彼女の映画初出演作。日本では1970年に劇場初公開され、1995年にもフランス映画社配給で公開された。2020年10月には、4Kリストア・デジタルリマスター版でリバイバル公開。2026年にも、「ロベール・ブレッソン傑作選」にてリバイバル公開。

The 7th feature film by master director Robert Bresson, known for "L'Argent," "Pickpocket," and "The Trial of Joan of Arc," released in 1966. Inspired by an episode from Dostoevsky's novel "The Idiot," it portrays the strange fate of a donkey and a young girl. In a small Pyrenean village, little Marie names a newborn donkey Balthazar and cherishes him. Ten years later, Balthazar is used for hard labor by a blacksmith but escapes the suffering and returns to Marie. The grown Marie rejoices at their reunion and takes Balthazar with her, but Gérard, who has feelings for her, becomes jealous and torments the donkey. Through the silent perspective of the donkey, the film calmly depicts human folly and ugliness, winning the Special Jury Prize at the Venice International Film Festival and earning acclaim as a masterpiece. Starring Anne Wiazemsky, who later appeared in many Godard films including "La Chinoise," in her film debut. First theatrically released in Japan in 1970, and again in 1995 distributed by France Eigasha. Revived in October 2020 in a 4K restored digital remaster. Also revived in 2026 as part of "Robert Bresson Masterpiece Selection."
