ニュー・ジャーマン・シネマの鬼才ベルナー・ヘルツォーク監督が、16世紀にアマゾン奥地の黄金郷を目指したスペイン探検隊の壮絶な運命を描いた傑作アドベンチャー。1560年、スペインの探検隊は伝説の黄金郷エルドラドを目指し、アンデス山脈最後の峠を越えようとしていた。周辺の様子を探るため分遣隊を送ることになり、隊長ウルスアや副長アギーレとその娘ら数十名が出発する。しかし厳しい自然や熱病、先住民の襲撃によって隊員たちは次々と命を落とし、分遣隊は内部崩壊してしまう。隊を掌握したアギーレは、狂気の赴くままにジャングルを突き進んでいくが……。クラウス・キンスキーがアギーレを熱演。

A few decades after the destruction of the Inca Empire, a Spanish expedition led by the infamous Aguirre leaves the mountains of Peru and goes down the Amazon River in search of the lost city of El Dorado. When great difficulties arise, Aguirre’s men start to wonder whether their quest will lead them to prosperity or certain death.
