南を目指す男の波乱万丈な旅を、アキ・カウリスマキ監督らしい淡々としたタッチで描く。失業したカスリネンは、自殺した父のキャデラックではるか南を目指す旅に出た。ところが途中で強盗に全財産を奪われ、日雇い仕事に出た帰りにイルメリという女性と知り合う。ある日彼は、金を奪った強盗と再会し捕まえようとするが、逆に警察に連行されそのまま投獄。イルメリの助けを借り、刑務所仲間のミッコネンと共に脱獄するのだが……。
A film depicting the turbulent journey of a man heading south, told in director Aki Kaurismaki's characteristic deadpan style. Having lost his job, Kasurinen sets out on a journey toward the far south in his father's Cadillac—his father having committed suicide. Along the way, however, he is robbed of his entire fortune by muggers, and on his way back from a day-labor job he meets a woman named Irma. One day he encounters the muggers who took his money and tries to catch them, but instead he is taken away by the police and imprisoned as is. With Irma's help, he escapes from prison together with his fellow inmate Mikkonen—but then...
