フレンチフィルムノワールの名匠ジャン＝ピエール・メルビルがアラン・ドロンを主演に迎え、一匹狼の殺し屋の生きざまを描いたフィルムノワール。 中折れ帽とトレンチコートを身にまとう孤高の殺し屋ジェフは、コールガールの恋人ジャーヌにアリバイを頼み、仕事へ向かう。今回の標的であるナイトクラブの経営者を首尾よく暗殺するジャンだったが、現場を立ち去ろうとした際に女性歌手ヴァレリーに顔を見られてしまう。警察の一斉検挙によりジェフも連行されるが、ヴァレリーが面通しで嘘の証言をしたため釈放されることに。しかし刑事はジェフを疑い、彼に尾行をつける。 共演に「カビリアの夜」のフランソワ・ペリエ、当時ドロンと婚姻関係にあったナタリー・ドロン。
A film noir masterpiece from French director Jean-Pierre Melville starring Alain Delon, depicting the life of a lone wolf hitman. Clad in a fedora and trench coat, the solitary killer Jef secures an alibi from his call-girl lover, Jane, before heading out on a hit. Jef successfully assassinates his target—a nightclub owner—but as he flees the scene, his face is seen by the club's singer, Valérie. Jef is hauled in during a police sweep, but he is released after Valérie provides false testimony during the lineup. Nevertheless, the suspicious detective puts a tail on him. Co-starring François Périer of "Nights of Cabiria" and Nathalie Delon, who was married to Delon at the time.
