フランスの文豪スタンダールの代表作を、「肉体の悪魔」のクロード・オータン＝ララ監督＆ジェラール・フィリップ主演のコンビで映画化。ナポレオン失脚後の1820年代フランスを舞台に、野心家の青年が自身の魅力を武器に貴族階級へ転身を図ろうとする姿を描き出す。 フランスの小都市ベリエール。大工の息子ジュリアン・ソレルは学問が得意で、シェラン司祭にその才覚を認められ、町長を務めるレナル家の家庭教師となる。やがてジュリアンはレナル夫人と恋に落ちるが、スキャンダルの発覚を恐れて神学校へ進むことに。そこでピラール司教の信頼を得たジュリアンは、パリのラモール侯爵の秘書として働き始め、侯爵令嬢マチルドと愛し合うようになるが……。 「うたかたの恋」「ロシュフォールの恋人たち」のダニエル・ダリューがレナル夫人、「狂った夜」のアントネッラ・ルアルディがマチルドを演じた。

This film adaptation of French literary giant Stendhal's masterpiece was directed by Claude Autant-Lara, known for "The Devil in the Flesh," and stars Gérard Philipe. Set in 1820s France after Napoleon's fall, it portrays an ambitious young man who uses his charm to try to climb into the aristocratic class. In the small French town of Verrières, Julien Sorel, a carpenter's son, excels in academics and is recognized by Abbé Chélan for his talent, becoming the tutor for the mayor's family, the Rênals. Julien soon falls in love with Madame de Rênal, but fearing scandal, he moves on to a seminary. There, he gains the trust of Abbé Pirard and begins working as secretary to the Marquis de la Môle in Paris, where he falls in love with the Marquis's daughter, Mathilde... Danièle Delorme, of "The Eternal Return" and "The Lovers of Rochefort," plays Madame de Rênal, and Antonella Lualdi, of "Crazy Night," plays Mathilde.
