第2次世界大戦前夜のチェコ、プラハを舞台に、葬儀社で働くごく普通の市民が、親ナチスの友人や社会情勢に影響され、破滅的な解決策へと駆り立てられていくさまを描いたダークコメディ。 プラハの小さな葬儀社で火葬人として働くカレル・コップフルキングルは、家族を愛する平凡な男だった。ある時、第1次世界大戦中にともに戦った戦友と再会するが、彼はナチ党の一員となっていた。友人に地元のユダヤ人社会を監視するよう説得されたカレルは、次第に友人や社会情勢に影響されていき……。 いたって普通の人間が加害者となっていく姿を、美しくもおどろおどろしい表現主義的な映像で描き出す。全体主義イデオロギーの恐怖を暴いた作品で、本国チェコでは公開禁止となり、共産主義政権が倒れる1990年まで上映できなかった。第5回シッチェス・カタロニア国際映画祭グランプリ受賞。日本では2026年4月、チェコ・ヌーベルバーグの名作を特集した「チェコ映画傑作選」にて劇場初公開。

Set in Prague, Czechoslovakia on the eve of World War II, this dark comedy depicts how an ordinary citizen working at a funeral home is influenced by his pro-Nazi friend and the social climate, driving him toward a disastrous solution. Karel Kopfrkingl, who works as a cremator at a small Prague funeral home, is an ordinary man who loves his family. One day, he reunites with a war buddy from World War I, who has become a member of the Nazi Party. Persuaded by his friend to monitor the local Jewish community, Karel gradually becomes influenced by his friend and the social situation... The film portrays how an utterly ordinary person becomes a perpetrator, using beautiful yet eerie expressionistic imagery. This work, which exposes the terror of totalitarian ideology, was banned in its home country of Czechoslovakia and could not be shown until the fall of the communist regime in 1990. It won the Grand Prize at the 5th Sitges - Catalonian International Film Festival. In Japan, it will have its theatrical premiere in April 2026 as part of "Czech Film Masterpieces," a series featuring classics of the Czech New Wave.
