ウォン・カーウァイ監督が1990年に手がけた長編第2作で、1960年代の香港で若者たちが織り成す恋愛模様を疾走感あふれる映像美で描き、カーウァイ監督の名を一躍世界に知らしめた青春群像劇。 ヨディはサッカー場で売り子をしていたスーに声をかけ、ふたりは恋に落ちる。しかしヨディは、自分が実の母親を知らないことに複雑な思いを抱えていた。スーと別れたヨディは、ナイトクラブでダンサーとして働くミミと一夜をともにする。部屋を出たミミはヨディの親友サブと出くわし、サブは彼女に一目ぼれする。夜間巡回中の警官タイドはスーに思いを寄せるが、スーはヨディのことを忘れられずにいた。キャストにはレスリー・チャン、マギー・チャン、カリーナ・ラウ、トニー・レオン、アンディ・ラウ、ジャッキー・チュンら香港映画界を代表する人気スターが集結。 日本初公開は92年。2018年2月、Bunkamuraル・シネマほかにてデジタルリマスター版が公開。2023年12月、特集上映「ウォン・カーウァイ　ザ・ビギニング」にて4Kレストア版が公開。

Director Wong Kar-wai's second feature film from 1990, this youth ensemble drama depicts the romantic entanglements of young people in 1960s Hong Kong with a sense of rushing visual beauty, catapulting Wong Kar-wai to international fame. Yuddy approaches Su, who works as a vendor at a soccer stadium, and they fall in love. However, Yuddy is troubled by not knowing his biological mother. After breaking up with Su, Yuddy spends a night with Mimi, a dancer at a nightclub. Leaving the room, Mimi encounters Yuddy's best friend Zeb, who falls in love with her at first sight. Tide, a policeman on night patrol, has feelings for Su, but she cannot forget Yuddy. The cast features Hong Kong cinema's biggest stars, including Leslie Cheung, Maggie Cheung, Carina Lau, Tony Leung, Andy Lau, and Jacky Cheung. First released in Japan in 1992. A digital remastered version was released in February 2018 at Bunkamura Le Cinema and other venues. A 4K restored version was released in December 2023 as part of the special screening "Wong Kar-wai: The Beginning."
