フランス映画界の名匠クロード・シャブロルが、英国の作家ルース・レンデルの小説「ロウフィールド館の惨劇」を原作に、ある殺意が生まれるまでを冷徹に描いたサスペンス。イザベル・ユペールとサンドリーヌ・ボネールという現代フランスを代表する2人の女優が共演し、1995年の第52回ベネチア国際映画祭で、そろって女優賞に輝いた。 裕福な一家に家政婦として雇われたソフィーは、真面目に働く一方で、誰にも知られたくない秘密を抱えていた。ある日、彼女は郵便局で働く奔放な女性ジャンヌと知り合い、2人は急速に親密になっていく。立場も性格も異なる女たちが孤独を分かち合うなか、やがて一家にソフィーの秘密が発覚し、穏やかだった日常は思いもよらぬ方向へと転がっていく。 主演の2人のほか、一家の主婦役にジャクリーヌ・ビセット、夫役にジャン＝ピエール・カッセルが顔をそろえる。脚本はシャブロルとカロリーヌ・エリアシェフ。日本で1996年に「沈黙の女　ロウフィールド館の惨劇」の邦題で劇場公開。2026年、邦題を「沈黙の女」に改め、特集上映「クロード・シャブロル傑作選 vol.2」にてデジタルリマスター版で再公開される。
