A Trout and the Last Waltz
A documentary that reexamines the relationship between the natural world and human society through the sakura masu, a fish that travels back and forth through the watershed connecting forests and seas. The sakura masu is a salmonid fish native to Asia, distributed mainly in Japan. Born in rivers as yamame, it journeys to the sea and returns to the river as sakura masu with the arrival of spring. Its journey connects forests and seas and, over a long time, has nurtured the livelihoods and culture of the watershed, but the development of modern society gradually blocked this migration. Tens of thousands of dams built for disaster prevention have divided rivers from the sea, and abandoned forests have increased the risk of disasters. The development of renewable energy being promoted as a measure against global warming is also shaking the relationship between nature and society. The yamame remaining in rivers across the country can be said to symbolize the watershed's nature, which has been severed from its continuity. In this film, while incorporating testimony from researchers and fisheries officials who have continued to engage with sakura masu, the world woven by the watershed through which sakura masu travel is depicted in three dimensions, unraveling the traces of nature and culture being lost in the shadow of economic development. Director Mato Sakamoto, who depicted the phantom fish iwana living in headwater streams in the documentary "Iwana in the Milk," completed this work by carrying forward the questions from that film.
