Tokyo Above, 300 Meters
A documentary that sheds light on the reality of "U.S. military privileges" brought about by the Japan-U.S. Status of Forces Agreement, centered on the Mainichi Shimbun's investigative reporting series "Questioning Privilege," which began in February 2020. Set primarily in Tokyo's Roppongi at the U.S. military facility Akasaka Press Center, Yokota Air Base in western Tokyo, and Okinawa where bases are concentrated, the film is structured in four chapters. Chapter 1, "Whose Sky Is Japan's?" draws on investigative reporting that confronted the issue of U.S. military helicopters flying over Tokyo, interweaving past accidents in Machida City and at Okinawa International University to expose the unchanged state of this country even 81 years after the war. Chapter 2, "Who Is Letting the Culprits Escape?" unravels the issue of secret Japan-U.S. agreements and examines sexual violence by U.S. soldiers and the Japanese government's response. Chapter 3, "For Whom Do U.S. Bases Exist?" listens to the thoughts of citizens confronting base issues, leading into the final chapter, "The Stars and Stripes and the Japanese," which questions the "normalcy" that has been left unaddressed in the name of the Japan-U.S. alliance. Directed by Atsushi Oshiro, known for documentaries such as "Shunga and the Japanese" and "Our National Museum of Western Art: Behind the Scenes of a Miraculous Collection," who spent approximately two years conducting interviews alongside Mainichi Shimbun reporters to complete the film.
