Kiriko's Baton: YELL
A music human drama directed by Toshiro Saiga of "Canon" and "Lady Kaga," inspired by the song "YELL" by Ikimonogakari, which was produced as the set piece for the junior high school division of the 76th NHK National School Music Competition and won the Excellent Work Award at the 51st Japan Record Awards. Kyoka Suzuki plays Kiyoko Harada, a legendary high school music teacher said to possess the "magic" to make students shine by waving her baton. Sho Kitamura, a journalist working at a small music publisher, is assigned to cover Kiyoko Harada—known as the "victory contractor" who led numerous national chorus competition championships—for a feature in the magazine "Music Journal" titled "Legendary Music Teachers." However, Kiyoko suddenly retired from teaching and disappeared. In fact, Kiyoko was once Kitamura's beloved teacher. Together with his former chorusmates, Kitamura retraces his memories and closes in on the reason Kiyoko vanished. Kyoka Suzuki, who played the legendary music teacher Kiyoko Harada, underwent conducting and piano lessons in preparation for filming. Also appearing are Daisuke Fujiwara as Kitamura, Kyoko Koizumi as the editor-in-chief who assigns Kitamura the story, and Ikue Sakakibara, Hiroyuki Konishi, Shin Takuma, and Yuko Natori in supporting roles. Directed and written by Toshiro Saiga of "Canon" and "Lady Kaga." Produced as part of the 70th anniversary commemorative projects for Atsugi City, Kanagawa Prefecture—also the filming location for the "YELL" music video—the film was shot entirely on location in Atsugi.
