ヌーベルバーグを代表する監督のひとりで、「いとこ同志」「殺意」などの作品を手がけてきたクロード・シャブロル監督が、正反対の女性2人が織りなすミステリアスな関係や愛憎を描いたサスペンスドラマ。 ある日、セーヌ川に架かるポンデザールの路面に絵を描いている娘・ホワイを見初めたブルジョワの女、フレデリック。気が強く派手好きで、父の遺産で気ままに暮らすフレデリックと、貧しい画家志望で物静かなホワイは正反対の性格だったが、貧乏暮らしに嫌気がさしていたホワイは、フレデリックの好意に甘え、彼女の屋敷でともに暮らすことになる。ある日、ホワイはパーティの客としてやってきた建築家のポールに心ひかれる。その様子を見ていたフレデリックはポールを誘惑し、関係をもつが……。 フレデリック役を演じたのは、当時シャブロルと結婚していたステファーヌ・オードランで、本作では前夫であるジャン＝ルイ・トランティニャンと共演した。第18回ベルリン国際映画祭で銀熊賞（最優秀女優賞）を受賞。

Directed by Claude Chabrol, a leading figure of the Nouvelle Vague known for films such as *Les Cousins* and *The Third Lover*, this suspense drama explores the mysterious relationship and the web of love and hate woven by two contrasting women. The story begins when Frédérique, a wealthy bourgeois woman, becomes infatuated with Why, a young woman she spots drawing on the pavement of the Pont des Arts over the Seine. Frédérique is assertive, flamboyant, and lives a life of leisure on her father’s inheritance; Why is a quiet, struggling aspiring artist. Despite their opposite natures, Why—weary of her impoverished life—accepts Frédérique’s invitation to live at her villa. However, when Why finds herself drawn to Paul, an architect attending one of their parties, Frédérique notices and decides to seduce him herself, sparking a tense affair. Frédérique is played by Stéphane Audran, who was married to Chabrol at the time, appearing here alongside her former husband Jean-Louis Trintignant. The film earned Audran the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the 18th Berlin International Film Festival.
