天賦の才に恵まれながらも薬物中毒や精神疾患を抱え43歳で早逝した孤高のピアニスト、ジェイムズ・ブッカーの生涯を描いた音楽ドキュメンタリー。 1939年にニューオーリンズで生まれたジェイムズ・ブッカーは、クラシックからジャズ、R＆B、ロックなどのジャンルを横断するパフォーマンスで数々の大物ミュージシャンたちと共演し、ソロ活動でも高く評価された。その一方で、薬物・アルコール中毒や躁うつ病など多くの問題を抱える破天荒な人物としても知られ、1983年にヘロインとアルコール常習による腎不全で43歳でこの世を去った。 本作では、ブッカー本人の貴重な演奏シーンをふんだんに盛り込みながら、ドクター・ジョン、アラン・トゥーサン、チャールズ・ネビル、ハリー・コニック・Jr.らニューオーリンズを代表するミュージシャンたちが思い入れを込めてブッカーについて語り、ニューオーリンズと音楽の神に愛された男の人生をひも解いていく。「Peter Barakan's Music Film Festival 2025」では「ジェイムズ・ブッカー　ニュー・オーリンズのピアノ王子」のタイトルで上映された。

Real name: James Carroll Booker III. The solitary genius who taught organ to Dr. John, prompting the latter to call him "the best black, gay, one-eyed junkie piano genius New Orleans ever produced." A virtuoso whose technique effortlessly bridged classical, jazz, R&B, and rock, he was as much a gifted vocalist as he was a master of the keys. Yet, he was also a man of many burdens—a minority figure struggling with drug and alcohol addiction, his sexuality, and mental illness. With a litany of eccentric rumors and a criminal record to his name, he was an indisputable wreck of a human being. But the moment he sat at the piano, his performance radiated a divine brilliance that transcended all boundaries. His playful personality showed not a trace of the pathos usually found in self-destructive souls. Turning his handicap into a signature style, his look—always sporting a sharp eyepatch—is just one of his many lovable charms.
