森田剛が主演を務め、マンガの制作現場を舞台に万年アシスタントの中年男性の奮闘を軽やかにつづったヒューマンドラマ。 巨匠マンガ家のアシスタントを長年にわたり務めてきた、42歳の土屋輝一。マンガ家デビューした後輩や人気声優である別居中の妻に対してモヤモヤした思いを抱え、一緒に暮らす高校受験生の娘とも気持ちがすれ違ってばかりいる。そんな彼のもとに、あるマンガ企画が舞い込む。仕事への熱量不足を自覚する29歳の中堅編集者・潮田ユキと、マンガ家を志す猪突猛進な40歳の新人アシスタント・山田ぽてとと共に、マンガ制作に踏み出す土屋だったが……。 編集者・潮田ユキ役で森川葵、新人アシスタント・山田ぽてと役で川上友里、潮田の上司である編集部長・馬場明役で阿部寛、土屋の別居中の妻・莉花役で松本まりか、土屋がアシスタントを務める巨匠マンガ家・吉住はるを役で武田鉄矢、土屋の娘・ひかり役で早瀬憩が共演。監督は、是枝裕和監督作の助監督などを務めてきた森本晶一と、「泣く子はいねぇが」の佐藤快磨。是枝監督率いる映像制作者集団「分福」に所属する両監督が共同監督を務め、森本監督が自身の経験に着想を得て原案・オリジナル脚本を手がけた。

Teruichi Tsuchiya, 42, is a perpetual assistant to a master manga artist. He feels uneasy about his junior colleague who has debuted as a manga artist, his estranged wife who is a popular voice actress, and for some reason, he is constantly at odds with his daughter, who lives with him and is preparing for her high school entrance exams. Just as a 17-year-old manga series comes to an end, a new manga project comes along. Joining him are Yuki Shioda, a 29-year-old editor who is aware of his lack of passion for his work, and Potato Yamada, a headstrong 40-year-old rookie assistant. What future awaits him after taking this step…?
