世界で数々の賞を受賞した、フロム・ソフトウェアによる和風アクションゲーム「SEKIRO: SHADOWS DIE TWICE」を、全編手描きによる2Dアニメーションで映画化。 戦国時代。雪深い峠を越えた先にある葦名の国の戦場で拾われ、忍の技を教え込まれた熟達の忍び・狼は、「竜胤（りゅういん）」と呼ばれる血を引く一族の末裔である孤独な少年・九郎に仕えている。竜胤の血には人を不死に変える力があり、九郎はその力を欲する葦名の侍に狙われていた。九郎と狼は彼らから逃れるなかで、竜胤が不死の見返りとして「竜咳（りゅうがい）」という致死の病を人々にもたらしていることを知る。自らの命を代償に竜咳を治めることができると気づいた九郎は、苦悩の末に竜胤断ちを決意する。そんな九郎の覚悟を知った狼は、彼の運命を変えるべく苦難に満ちた戦いに身を投じていく。 原作ゲームに引き続き、狼役で浪川大輔、九郎役で佐藤みゆ希、葦名弦一郎役で津田健次郎が声の出演。WEB系アニメーターとして日本の作画アニメーションシーンを牽引してきた沓名健一が長編初監督を務め、「Fate/stay night」シリーズの佐藤卓哉が脚本、「魔法少女まどか☆マギカ」の岸田隆宏がキャラクターデザインを担当。さまざまなメディアで活躍する音楽家・芸術家の蓮沼執太が音楽を手がけ、主題曲には坂本龍一の「Blu」を起用した。

FromSoftware's award-winning Japanese-style action game 'SEKIRO: SHADOWS DIE TWICE' is adapted into a fully hand-drawn 2D animated film. In the Sengoku period, Wolf, a master shinobi found on a battlefield in the snowy mountain country of Ashina and trained in the ways of the ninja, serves the lonely young lord Kuro, the last descendant of a bloodline known as the 'Dragon's Heritage.' The Dragon's Heritage blood has the power to grant immortality, and Kuro is targeted by the samurai of Ashina who covet this power. While fleeing from them, Kuro and Wolf learn that the Dragon's Heritage, as the price for immortality, brings a fatal disease called 'Dragonrot' upon the people. Realizing he can cure Dragonrot at the cost of his own life, Kuro, after much anguish, decides to sever the Dragon's Heritage. Learning of Kuro's resolve, Wolf throws himself into a arduous battle to change his lord's fate. Reprising their roles from the original game, Namikawa Daisuke voices Wolf, Sato Miyuki voices Kuro, and Tsuda Kenjiro voices Genichiro Ashina. Kutsuna Kenichi, a web animator who has led the Japanese animation scene, makes his feature directorial debut. Sato Takuya ('Fate/stay night' series) writes the screenplay, Kishida Takahiro ('Puella Magi Madoka Magica') handles character design, musician and artist Hasunuma Shuta provides the music, and the theme song is Ryuichi Sakamoto's 'Blu.'
