「少林サッカー」「カンフーハッスル」で人気のチャウ・シンチーが、「ミラクル7号」以来6年ぶりに手がけた監督作。日本でも映画やドラマなどさまざまなメディアで描かれ、誰もが知る中国の伝奇小説「西遊記」を題材に、三蔵法師と孫悟空、猪八戒、沙悟浄が出会い、天竺を目指す前の物語を独自に描いたアクションエンターテインメント。三蔵法師は、得意の「わらべ唄」で妖怪の善の心を呼び覚まそうするが失敗ばかりの若き妖怪ハンター・玄奘として描かれ、孫悟空、沙悟浄、猪八戒もそれぞれ独特な姿で登場。映画オリジナルのキャラクターとして、人気女優スー・チーが扮する女性妖怪ハンターも活躍する。

Young monster hunter Xuanzang uses his "Three Hundred Nursery Rhymes" as a weapon to try to awaken the good hearts of monsters, but always fails. One day, in a riverside village attacked by a half-fish, half-beast monster, he works with the villagers to haul the creature ashore, where it transforms into human form. The nursery rhymes Xuanzang sings have no effect at all, and when he is attacked instead, he is saved by a female monster hunter named Duan.
