Children Untold
A drama written, planned, and directed by Miwa Nishikawa of "Under the Open Sky" and "The Long Excuse," depicting children who lost their families and fell through the cracks of society in postwar Japan. Kotoko, a 12-year-old girl who lost her family and daily life to the war, chooses to hide her gender and live as a boy in order to survive. It was a decision made to escape the reality in which being a girl itself was dangerous, as comfort facilities for occupation forces and street prostitution spread. Kotoko's life, which had been peaceful under her musician father, was transformed by the war and defeat, forcing her to make the harsh choice of "letting go of herself." Meanwhile, Sone, a teacher at the school where Kotoko had once been evacuated, had been complicit in militarist education during the war, but with defeat lost both his beliefs and his position, and is compelled to live while confronting the responsibility of his past. For the role of 12-year-old Kotoko, Aimi Kohachi was selected from approximately 500 candidates through an audition. Fumi Nikaido plays the female teacher Sone, with Yutaka Takenouchi, Kaito Sakurai, and Kotone Hanase rounding out the supporting cast. Composer Marihiko Hara, who won numerous awards for "Kokuho," handles the music and also makes a cameo appearance as a musician in the film. The visual effects production company Shirogumi, which won the Visual Effects award at the 96th Academy Awards for "Godzilla Minus One," handled VFX, realistically recreating the streetscape of 1945.
