1954年に東宝が製作・公開した特撮怪獣映画の金字塔。太平洋の沖合いで船舶が次々に沈没する事件が発生。数少ない生存者が、巨大な怪獣の目撃談をもたらす。古生物学者の山根博士や助手で娘の恵美子、その恋人でサルベージ機関の所長・尾形らで結成された調査団が事件現場近くに浮かぶ大戸島に派遣され、やがて彼らの前に怪獣が姿を現す。島の古い言い伝えから「ゴジラ」と命名された怪獣は、密かに生き残っていた太古の生物が、繰り返される水爆実験の放射能の影響で目を覚ましたものであるとされ、対応策が練られる。しかし、その強大な力に人間たちは成すすべもなく、東京に上陸したゴジラは街を火の海に変えていく。その頃、山根博士の愛弟子である科学者の芹沢は、ゴジラにも有効な恐るべき発明を実現させていた。その技術がいつか悪用されることを恐れ、使用をためらっていた芹沢だったが……。98年にはローランド・エメリッヒ監督によるハリウッド版も製作。そして60周年を迎えた2014年、2度目のハリウッド版「GODZILLA ゴジラ」（ギャレス・エドワーズ監督）の製作・公開を記念し、原点である本作が「ゴジラ 60周年記念デジタルリマスター版」としてリバイバル公開された。

A landmark tokusatsu kaiju film produced and released by Toho in 1954. Ships are sinking one after another in the Pacific Ocean. The few survivors report sightings of a giant monster. An investigation team formed by paleontologist Dr. Yamane, his daughter and assistant Emiko, and her fiancé Hideto Ogata, head of a salvage company, is dispatched to Odo Island near the incident site, where the monster eventually appears. Named "Godzilla" after an old island legend, the monster is believed to be an ancient creature that survived in secret, awakened by the radiation from repeated hydrogen bomb tests, and countermeasures are devised. However, humans are helpless against its immense power, and Godzilla lands in Tokyo, turning the city into a sea of fire. Meanwhile, Dr. Yamane's beloved student, scientist Serizawa, has realized a terrible invention that could be effective against Godzilla. Fearing its future misuse, Serizawa hesitates to use it... A Hollywood version directed by Roland Emmerich was also produced in 1998. To commemorate the 60th anniversary in 2014 and the production/release of the second Hollywood version "GODZILLA" (directed by Gareth Edwards), this original film was revived as the "Godzilla 60th Anniversary Digital Remastered Version."
