特撮ドラマシリーズの金字塔「ウルトラマン」の60周年を記念して製作されたドキュメンタリー。 1966年に放送開始された特撮テレビドラマ「ウルトラマン」は、最高視聴率42.8％を記録し、社会現象を巻き起こした。誕生から60年が過ぎた現在も、円谷プロダクションは新たなウルトラマンシリーズ作品を次々と世に送り出し、世代や国境を越えて愛され続けている。 本作は「怪物」「万引き家族」などの映画監督・是枝裕和が企画を手がけ、映画・特撮・デザインなど各分野を代表するクリエイターが多数出演。映画監督のギレルモ・デル・トロ、是枝裕和、ニコラス・ウィンディング・レフン、ゲームクリエイターの小島秀夫、アニメ監督の庵野秀明、特撮監督・映画監督の樋口真嗣ら国内外の第一線で活躍する人々が独自の視点で語りつくし、「ウルトラマンとは何なのか」という疑問をひも解いていく。主人公がヒーローでありながら怪獣のバックグラウンドも丁寧に描くという世界観や、ウルトラマンと怪獣双方の造形が持つ強い魅力に迫るとともに、円谷英二や当時のスタッフの発想と仕事にも光を当て、ウルトラマンがどのようにして世界へ広がっていったのか、その歩みをたどる。

The special-effects TV drama 'Ultraman,' which first aired in 1966, achieved a peak viewership rating of 42.8% and sparked a social phenomenon. Even over 60 years since its birth, Tsuburaya Productions continues to release new Ultraman series works, beloved across generations and borders. This film is planned by filmmaker Kore-eda Hirokazu, known for 'Monsters' and 'Shoplifters,' and features numerous leading creators from film, special effects, and design. Filmmakers Guillermo del Toro, Kore-eda Hirokazu, and Nicolas Winding Refn, game creator Kojima Hideo, anime director Anno Hideaki, and special effects/film director Higuchi Shinji, among others active at the forefront of their fields both in Japan and abroad, offer their unique perspectives to unravel the question, 'What is Ultraman?' The film explores the worldview where the protagonist is a hero yet carefully depicts the background of the kaiju, and the strong appeal of the designs of both Ultraman and the monsters, while also shedding light on the ideas and work of Tsuburaya Eiji and the staff of that era, tracing the journey of how Ultraman spread across the world.
