An entomologist (played by Eiji Okada) goes on an excursion in the desert but accidentally misses the return shuttle bus and becomes trapped in a small desert village. He settles in at the home of a widow (played by Kyoko Kishida), and after entertaining her, realizes that the way to the outside world is blocked. He slowly observes all the strange occurrences in the village—for example, every night all the villagers must shovel out sand to keep their houses from being buried, and all water is managed under a rationing system. The widow who took him in tries to seduce him with her body, attempting to reorganize the family. He tries to escape many times but fails, and outwardly adopts an empty, contemptuous attitude, entering the village's routine labor and enjoying the rationed life, all while constantly plotting his escape in his heart. One day, the widow suddenly falls ill, and a doctor diagnoses an unexpected pregnancy. As everyone rushes her to the hospital, the man finally gets the chance to escape—the chance of a lifetime......
