1941年にスコットランド沖で大量のウイスキーを積んだ貨物船が座礁した実在の事件をモチーフにしたコメディ。イギリスの作家コンプトン・マッケンジーが1947年に発表した同名小説を、「マダムと泥棒」のアレクサンダー・マッケンドリック監督が映画化した。1930年代後半から50年代半ばにかけてイギリスのイーリング撮影所で制作された一連の喜劇映画「イーリング・コメディ」の1作。 第2次世界大戦下のイギリス。ナチスドイツによるロンドン空襲が激化するなか、人々にとって「命の水」であるウイスキーの配給が停止されてしまう。そんな折、スコットランドの小島沖で、約26万本ものウイスキーを積んだ貨物船が座礁した。船が沈没する寸前、島民たちは船長と乗組員を救助し、可能な限りのウイスキーを船から引き揚げて島の洞窟に隠す。やがてそのウイスキーを回収しようとする役人が現れ、島民たちとの攻防戦が繰り広げられる。 2016年にはリメイク版が製作され、「ウイスキーと2人の花嫁」の邦題で日本公開された。特集上映「英国イーリング・コメディの黄金時代」（2026年6月20日〜7月17日、新宿K's cinema）上映作品。

A comedy inspired by the real-life 1941 shipwreck of a cargo vessel carrying a large quantity of whiskey off the coast of Scotland. Based on the 1947 novel of the same name by British author Compton Mackenzie, this film was directed by Alexander Mackendrick, known for 'The Ladykillers.' It is one of the 'Ealing Comedies,' a series of comedy films produced at Ealing Studios in the UK from the late 1930s to the mid-1950s. Set in Britain during World War II. As Nazi Germany intensifies its air raids on London, the rationing of whiskey—considered 'the water of life'—is halted. Just then, a cargo ship carrying about 260,000 bottles of whiskey runs aground off a small Scottish island. Just before the ship sinks, the islanders rescue the captain and crew, salvage as much whiskey as possible, and hide it in a cave on the island. Soon, officials arrive to recover the whiskey, leading to a battle of wits with the islanders. A remake was produced in 2016 and released in Japan under the title 'Whiskey and Two Brides.' This film is part of the special screening series 'The Golden Age of British Ealing Comedies' (June 20–July 17, 2026, at Shinjuku K's Cinema).
