ロシアの巨匠アレクサンドル・ソクーロフが、世界遺産エルミタージュ美術館を舞台に2002年に発表した作品。映画史上初となる90分間ワンカット撮影で作り上げ、過去と現在が交錯する時間旅行を描いた。 19世紀に実在したフランスの外交官キュスティーヌ伯爵と、監督ソクーロフ自身のナレーションに導かれ、ロシアが世界に誇るエルミタージュ美術館の内部を巡っていく。ラファエロ、ダ・ビンチ、レンブラント、エル・グレコら超一級の美術品が並ぶ館内では、ロシア300年の歴史が次々と立ち現れる。ある時はピョートル大帝、ある時は観劇するエカテリーナ女帝、ある時は革命が忍び寄るニコライ2世の最後の晩餐にと、彼らは歴史上の人物たちと遭遇していく。 美術品を陳列したままの美術館内部を舞台に、俳優や群衆の動きを一体化させ、ロシア300年の歴史を一続きの映像として描き出した。指揮者のワレリー・ゲルギエフが特別出演。演奏はマリインスキー歌劇場管弦楽団が担当した。日本では2003年に劇場初公開されて話題を呼び、2026年9月にはデジタルリマスター版で再公開される。

Russian master Alexander Sokurov presents this 2002 work set in the world heritage site, the Hermitage Museum. Created with a single 90-minute continuous shot, a first in film history, it depicts a time travel where past and present intertwine. Guided by the narration of the 19th-century French diplomat, the Marquis de Custine, and Sokurov himself, the film journeys through the interior of Russia's pride, the Hermitage Museum. Within the halls lined with masterpieces by Raphael, da Vinci, Rembrandt, and El Greco, 300 years of Russian history unfold. They encounter historical figures—sometimes Peter the Great, sometimes Catherine the Great at the theater, sometimes the last supper of Nicholas II as revolution looms. Using the museum interior with its artworks still on display as the stage, the movements of actors and crowds are unified to depict 300 years of Russian history in a single continuous image. Conductor Valery Gergiev makes a special appearance, with music performed by the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra. The film caused a stir when it was first released in Japanese theaters in 2003, and a digitally remastered version is set for re-release in September 2026.
