Memorizu
Starring Tasuku Emoto, this drama explores themes of family memory and records. Yuta, who lives with his wife and daughter in Tokyo, travels to a rural town in Kyushu to care for his father-in-law Makoto, who has broken his leg, until he recovers. While helping out at Makoto's old-fashioned photo studio, Yuta exchanges videos taken on his smartphone with his wife and daughter back in Tokyo. Even without major events, the accumulation of daily trivial records and memories quietly and vividly reveals the long span of a family's life. Moka Kamishiraishi ("Shōgun," "Girl Encounters") plays Yuta's wife Yuki, who continues working and raising their child in Tokyo. Issey Ogata plays Makoto, the taciturn father-in-law, and Yū Kashii plays a character symbolizing precious family memories. Director Miu Sakanishi, who gained attention for short films while at Kyoto University of Art and Design and later worked as an assistant director for Yūya Ishii and a making-of cameraman for Yūichirō Doi, makes her feature-length directorial debut.
