About Jun
This documentary follows Junichiro Shimada, the man behind Natsuhasha, a one-person publishing house based in Kichijoji, Tokyo. Founded in 2009 with the mission to create "books to be read over and over again," Natsuhasha publishes about three literary titles a year, ranging from reprints of forgotten Showa-era masterpieces to essays by bookstore owners. From editing and accounting to packing and shipping, Shimada handles every aspect of the business alone. Despite starting with no prior experience in publishing, he has sustained this work for 15 years. Shimada spent a difficult youth struggling to find his place; he aspired to be a writer until age 27, but after facing setbacks and failing to adapt to conventional employment, he felt adrift. His life finally began to move forward following the death of his cousin in his hometown of Kochi. Finding solace in a single poem during his grief, he decided to publish it himself as a gift for his cousin’s parents. That book, *After the Farewell*, went on to become Natsuhasha’s signature publication. Having once been saved by books himself, Shimada now seeks to give back to the world of books, bookstores, and the communities that surround them. Filmed over 580 days, the documentary captures Shimada’s daily life intertwined with books. Director Ryutaro Tano (*Children’s Summer: Chernobyl and Fukushima*) personally handled everything from production to distribution, with actor Shohei Uno providing the narration.
