Hirokazu Kore-eda, of "Shoplifters" and "Monster," directs, writes, and edits a live-action film adaptation of the manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto, known for "Chainsaw Man," which was published in 2021 and whose theatrical anime version also generated significant buzz. The film carefully traces the 13-year journey of two girls bound by their earnest devotion to manga, set against the beautiful changing seasons primarily filmed in Kahoku City, Akita Prefecture. Fujino, a confident fourth grader, serializes a four-panel manga in the school newspaper and is praised by her classmates. One day, however, she sees a manga by Kyomoto, a reclusive classmate, published in the school paper, and is crushed by its overwhelming artistic skill. From then on, Fujino devotes herself to drawing manga in hopes of improving, but unable to close the gap with Kyomoto, she eventually gives up. On graduation day, she delivers Kyomoto's diploma to her home and learns that Kyomoto was a fan of her manga. Bound by their earnest love for manga, Fujino and Kyomoto begin creating manga together, building irreplaceable moments, until an event occurs that profoundly shakes their daily lives. Nozomi Deguchi of "All Greens" stars as Fujino, and Aju Makita of "Happiness" plays Kyomoto. Masaki Suda appears as the manga editor Maeda, Kankuro Kudo as Tamai, the teacher at Fujino and Kyomoto's elementary school, and Kayo Noro as Fujino's mother Akari. Music is composed by Yuta Bandoh, who won the Best Music Award at the 45th Japan Academy Prize for "Belle." Screened in the competition section of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival in 2026.
