名匠ロベール・ブレッソンが傑作「バルタザールどこへ行く」の直後に手がけた長編8作目。フランスの作家ジョルジュ・ベルナノスの小説を原作に、ひとりの少女のたどる悲しい運命を、厳格なフレーミングと俳優たちの最小限に抑制された演技により、ストイックかつリアルに、まざまざと描いた。 フランスの片田舎に暮らす14歳のムシェットは、アルコール中毒の父親と病気の母親に代わって家を切り盛りさせられている上に、学校では同級生や教師から酷い扱いを受けていた。そんな薄幸の少女の運命は、ある雨の夜、森の中で密猟者と出会ったことをきっかけに、さらなる悲惨な破滅へと向かって転がり落ちていく。 絶望の淵に立たされながらも反抗心を秘めた主人公ムシェットを、本作のために抜てきされたナディーヌ・ノルティエが演じた。1967年製作で、日本では1974年にエキプ・ド・シネマ配給で初公開。1995年にはフランス映画社配給で公開。2020年10月には、4Kリストア・デジタルリマスター版でリバイバル公開。2026年にも、「ロベール・ブレッソン傑作選」にてリバイバル公開。

Master filmmaker Robert Bresson's eighth feature, made right after his masterpiece "Au Hasard Balthazar." Based on a novel by French author Georges Bernanos, it starkly and realistically depicts the tragic fate of a young girl through rigorous framing and the actors' minimally restrained performances. 14-year-old Mouchette lives in the French countryside, forced to run the household for her alcoholic father and ill mother, while being cruelly treated by classmates and teachers at school. The unfortunate girl's fate takes a turn for the worse when, one rainy night, she encounters a poacher in the forest, sending her spiraling into further misery and ruin. Nadine Nortier, discovered for this role, plays the protagonist Mouchette, a girl standing on the brink of despair yet harboring a rebellious spirit. Produced in 1967, it was first released in Japan in 1974 by Equipe de Cinema, and again in 1995 by France Eiga Sha. A 4K restored digital remastered version had a revival release in October 2020. Another revival release is scheduled for 2026 as part of the "Robert Bresson Masterpiece Selection."
