Journey into Sato Tadao

A documentary exploring the cinematic life of film critic Tadao Sato. Known for pioneering the path of film criticism as a self-taught scholar, systematizing Japanese film history over a 60-year career as a critic, and later discovering and introducing Asian cinema to Japan as a lifelong pursuit, Sato is also known as the first film critic to be selected as a Person of Cultural Merit. He discussed films from a wide range of perspectives through the eyes of ordinary people and devoted himself to film exchange with Asia and the nurturing of younger generations, but passed away in March 2022 at the age of 91. Mizuho Terasaki, a former student of Sato's at the Japan Film School (now Japan Institute of the Moving Image) where he served as president, makes her directorial debut, having closely followed Sato since 2019. Through interviews conducted during his lifetime and testimony from film figures around the world, the film delves into his character—his wartime experiences as a boy, his encounter with cinema, his meeting with his beloved wife Hisako who walked with him along the long road of his film life, and his affection for the Indian film The Magician's Grandpa—as it journeys from Japan to Asia in search of Sato's treasures.
