直木賞と山本周五郎賞をダブル受賞した永井紗耶子による同名小説を、柄本佑と渡辺謙の初共演で映画化したミステリー時代劇。 時は江戸時代。ある雪の降る夜、木挽町の芝居小屋「森田座」のすぐ近くで、美しい若衆・菊之助が父の仇討ちを見事に成し遂げた。その事件は多くの人々に目撃され、美談として語られることになる。1年半後、菊之助の縁者だという侍・総一郎が、仇討ちの顛末を知りたいと森田座を訪れる。菊之助に関わった人々から事件の経緯を聞くなかで徐々に事実が明らかになり、やがて仇討ちの裏に隠された「秘密」が浮かび上がる。 仇討ち事件の真相を追う田舎侍・加瀬総一郎役で柄本佑が主演を務め、森田座で謀略を巡らせる立作者・篠田金治を渡辺謙が重厚に演じる。仇討ちを成した者・伊納菊之助役で長尾謙杜（なにわ男子）、菊之助の父を手にかけ仇討ちされた無法者・作兵衛役で北村一輝、森田座の木戸芸者・一八役で瀬戸康史、森田座の立師・相良与三郎役で滝藤賢一、女形で衣裳方の芳澤ほたる役で高橋和也、小道具方の久蔵役で正名僕蔵が共演。テレビドラマ「忠臣蔵狂詩曲No.5 中村仲蔵　出世階段」などの時代劇や映画「大停電の夜に」で知られる源孝志が監督・脚本を手がけた。

A mystery period drama based on the award-winning novel by Sayako Nagai—recipient of both the Naoki Prize and the Yamamoto Shugoro Prize—marking the first screen collaboration between Tasuku Emoto and Ken Watanabe. Set in the Edo period, the story begins on a snowy night near the Morita-za theater in Kobikicho, where a beautiful youth named Kikunosuke successfully carries out a revenge killing to avenge his father. Witnessed by many, the event is hailed as a noble tale of justice. A year and a half later, a country samurai named Soichiro Kase, claiming to be a relative of Kikunosuke, arrives at the Morita-za seeking the full story of the incident. As he interviews those connected to Kikunosuke, the facts slowly unravel, eventually exposing a "secret" hidden beneath the surface of the revenge. Tasuku Emoto stars as Soichiro Kase, the samurai pursuing the truth, while Ken Watanabe delivers a commanding performance as Kinji Shinoda, the head playwright at Morita-za who orchestrates the schemes within the theater. The ensemble cast features Kento Nagao (Naniwa Danshi) as Kikunosuke Ino, the young man who achieved his revenge; Kazuki Kitamura as Sakubee, the outlaw who killed Kikunosuke’s father; Koji Seto as Ippachi, a theater barker; Kenichi Takito as Yosaburo Sagara, the fight choreographer; Kazuya Takahashi as Hotaru Yoshizawa, an *onnagata* actor and costume manager; and Bokuzo Masana as Kyuzo, the prop master. The film is written and directed by Takashi Minamoto, known for the period drama *Chushingura Rhapsody No. 5: Nakamura Nakazo’s Rise to Fame* and the film *Until the Lights Come Back*.
