旧来の漢方医と西洋医学を学んだ蘭方医が混在した幕末を舞台に、村医者である蘭方医・大倉太吉の奮闘を、佐々木蔵之介の主演で描いた時代劇。 幕末、京都の郊外に位置する村。大倉太吉は、貧富や身分を問わず市井の人々を救う、寛容で好奇心旺盛な蘭方医。漢方医・玄斎とは、日々激しい論争を繰り広げる犬猿の仲だ。ある日、気性の激しい青年・新左を太吉が手術で救ったことを契機に、太吉と新左の人生が大きく変化していく。 京都の医大生たちを描いた群像劇「ヒポクラテスたち」で知られる大森一樹監督が、人情味あふれる医者とその妻を描いた1960年の映画「ふんどし医者」をベースに、幕末の京都を舞台とした、日本の現代医学の黎明期を描く作品として本作を企画。撮影準備中の2022年に大森監督が逝去したことで、企画は幻となりかけたが、かつて大森監督の助監督を務めていた「独立少年合唱団」の緒方明監督が遺志を継ぎ、完成へとこぎつけた。 太吉役を佐々木蔵之介が演じる。そのほか、「ヒポクラテスたち」が映画デビュー作の内藤剛志が太吉のライバルである玄斎役を務め、「ヒポクラテスたち」で研修医を演じた柄本明が謎の侍・弾蔵役で出演。また、ナレーションを大森監督作「風の歌を聴け」で映画デビューを果たした室井滋、脚本を70年代から大森監督をよく知る西岡琢也が担当するなど、大森一樹監督ゆかりのキャスト、スタッフ陣が多数参加している。

A period drama set at the end of the Edo period, when traditional Chinese medicine doctors and Western-trained Dutch medicine doctors coexisted, starring Kuranosuke Sasaki as the village Dutch medicine doctor Daisuke Okura. In a village on the outskirts of Kyoto at the end of the Edo period, Daisuke Okura is a tolerant, curious Dutch medicine doctor who saves common people regardless of wealth or status. He is constantly engaged in fierce arguments with the Chinese medicine doctor Gensai, his sworn enemy. One day, Okura saves a hot-tempered young man named Shinsa through surgery, an event that drastically changes both their lives. Director Kazuki Omori, known for the ensemble drama 'Hippocrates' about Kyoto medical students, conceived this film based on the 1960 film 'Fundoshi Doctor,' which depicted a warm-hearted doctor and his wife, setting it in Kyoto at the end of the Edo period to portray the dawn of modern Japanese medicine. When Omori passed away in 2022 while preparing for filming, the project nearly became a phantom, but Akira Ogata, director of 'The Independent Teenage Chorus' and a former assistant director to Omori, carried on his will and brought it to completion. Kuranosuke Sasaki plays Okura. Takeshi Naito, who made his film debut in 'Hippocrates,' plays Okura's rival Gensai, and Akira Emoto, who played a resident doctor in 'Hippocrates,' appears as the mysterious samurai Danzo. Additionally, Shizuka Muroi, who made her film debut in Omori's 'Hear the Wind Sing,' provides narration, and Takuya Nishioka, who has known Omori since the 1970s, wrote the screenplay, with many cast and crew members associated with Kazuki Omori participating.
