2011年1月から4月にかけて放送された全12話のテレビアニメ「魔法少女まどか☆マギカ」を再構成した劇場版2部作の前編。 平凡な日常を送っていた少女・鹿目まどかの通う中学校にある日、謎めいた転校生・暁美ほむらがやってくる。その日の放課後、謎の声に導かれ、「キュゥべえ」と名乗る不思議な生き物と出会ったまどかは、キュゥべえから「僕と契約して、魔法少女になってほしい」と告げられる。 総監督の新房昭之、脚本の虚淵玄（ニトロプラス）、異空間設計の劇団イヌカレーら、独特の世界観を築き上げたテレビ版のスタッフが結集した。

The first part of a two-part theatrical film reconstruction of the 12-episode TV anime 'Puella Magi Madoka Magica,' which aired from January to April 2011. One day, a mysterious transfer student named Homura Akemi arrives at the middle school attended by Madoka Kaname, an ordinary girl living a mundane life. After school that day, guided by a mysterious voice, Madoka encounters a strange creature calling itself Kyubey, who tells her, 'I want you to make a contract with me and become a magical girl.' The staff from the TV series, who built its unique worldview, including chief director Akiyuki Shinbo, screenwriter Gen Urobuchi (Nitroplus), and the otherworldly space design team Gekidan Inu Curry, have reunited for this film.
