「僕の帰る場所」「海辺の彼女たち」で国内外から注目を集めてきた藤元明緒監督が、「世界で最も迫害されている民族のひとつ」と言われるロヒンギャの証言をもとに、故郷を追われた難民の幼い姉弟が家族との再会を求め命懸けで国境を越える姿を描いたロードムービー。容赦ない現実と幻想的な表現が入り混じる世界観で、難民たちの過酷な密航の旅路を子どもの視点から映し出す。 難民キャンプで暮らす5歳のシャフィと9歳の姉ソミーラは家族との再会を願い、叔母とともに遠く離れたマレーシアへ向かう。パスポートを持つことができない彼らは密航業者に導かれるまま漁船に乗せられ、自然の猛威や警備隊による追跡、人身売買の危機に追い込まれながらも、過酷な道のりを必死に乗り越えていく。 主演を務めたソミーラとシャフィの姉弟をはじめ、キャストには総勢200人を超えるロヒンギャたちを起用。故郷を追われた当事者である彼らの声とまなざしは、演技未経験ながらも映画の世界にリアリティを与えている。2025年・第82回ベネチア国際映画祭オリゾンティ部門にて日本人監督初の審査員特別賞を受賞するなど、世界各地の映画祭で高く評価された。

Directed by Akio Fujimoto, who has garnered international attention for "Where I Belong" and "The Girls at the Seashore," this road movie is based on the testimonies of the Rohingya, often called "one of the most persecuted ethnic groups in the world." It depicts a young refugee brother and sister, driven from their homeland, risking their lives to cross borders in search of their family. Blending unrelenting reality with fantastical imagery, the film portrays the harrowing journey of refugees smuggling themselves across borders from a child's perspective. Five-year-old Shafi and his nine-year-old sister Somiir, living in a refugee camp, set out with their aunt for distant Malaysia, hoping to reunite with their family. Unable to obtain passports, they are led by smugglers onto a fishing boat, and despite facing the fury of nature, pursuit by security forces, and the threat of human trafficking, they desperately overcome the grueling journey. The cast includes over 200 Rohingya people, led by the siblings Somiir and Shafi in the lead roles. Their voices and gazes, as people who have themselves been driven from their homeland, lend the film a powerful realism despite their lack of acting experience. The film received high praise at film festivals worldwide, including winning the Special Jury Prize in the Orizzonti section at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival in 2025, the first time a Japanese director has won this award.
