当時25歳の若き天才オーソン・ウェルズが製作・監督・脚本・主演を務め、映画史に残る傑作として語り継がれる人間ドラマ。実在の新聞王ウィリアム・ランドルフ・ハーストをモデルに、ある大富豪の波乱に満ちた一生を、革新的な映像技法とストーリー構成で描き出す。大富豪の新聞王ケーンが「バラのつぼみ」という謎の言葉を残してこの世を去った。その言葉の意味を探るよう調査を命じられたニュース映画の編集者は、ケーンの元妻や事業のパートナーら、生前の彼を知る人々に取材を重ねていく。やがて浮かび上がったのは、すべてを手に入れた男の孤独な生涯だった。1942年・第14回アカデミー賞で脚本賞を受賞。

Newspaper magnate Charles Foster Kane is taken from his mother as a boy and made the ward of a rich industrialist. As a result, every well-meaning, tyrannical or self-destructive move he makes for the rest of his life appears in some way to be a reaction to that deeply wounding event.
