「ドライブ・マイ・カー」「悪は存在しない」の濱口竜介監督が、パリを舞台に同じ名前の響きを持つ女性2人の魂の邂逅を描いたドラマ。がんの転移を経験しながら生き抜く哲学者・宮野真生子と、臨床現場の調査を積み重ねた人類学者・磯野真穂が交わした20通の往復書簡「急に具合が悪くなる」を原作に、偶然出会った2人の女性の交流と世界に対峙する姿を描き出す。 パリ郊外の介護施設「自由の庭」で施設長を務めるマリー＝ルー・フォンテーヌは、入居者を人間らしくケアすることを理想としながらも、人手不足やスタッフの無理解に悩まされていた。そんな中、日本人の舞台演出家・森崎真理と出会ったマリー＝ルーは、がん闘病中の彼女が描く演劇に勇気をもらう。同じ名前の響きを持つ偶然に導かれて交流を始める真理とマリー＝ルーだったが、あるとき真理は急に具合が悪くなる。真理の病の進行とともに2人の関係は深まり、互いの魂を通わせ合うようになっていく。 「ベネデッタ」のビルジニー・エフィラがマリー＝ルー、「ウルヴァリン：SAMURAI」などハリウッド映画にも出演する世界的ファッションモデルのTAOこと岡本多緒が真理を演じ、真理が演出する舞台の出演俳優・清宮吾朗役で「敵」の名優・長塚京三、吾朗の孫・窪寺智樹役で「見はらし世代」の注目若手俳優・黒崎煌代が共演。2026年・第79回カンヌ国際映画祭コンペティション部門に出品され、ビルジニー・エフィラと岡本多緒がそろって女優賞を受賞。岡本は日本人で初のカンヌ国際映画祭女優賞受賞を果たした。

Director Ryusuke Hamaguchi ("Drive My Car," "Evil Does Not Exist") portrays the spiritual encounter of two women with the same-sounding name in Paris. Based on the exchange of 20 letters between philosopher Makiko Miyano, who survived cancer metastasis, and anthropologist Maho Isono, titled "Suddenly Feeling Ill," the film depicts the connection between two women who meet by chance and their confrontation with the world. Marie-Lou Fontaine, director of the care facility "Garden of Freedom" on the outskirts of Paris, struggles with staff shortages and misunderstanding while striving for humane care. She meets Japanese stage director Mari Morisaki, who is battling cancer, and draws courage from her theater work. Guided by the coincidence of their similar-sounding names, Marie-Lou and Mari begin a friendship. But one day, Mari suddenly falls ill. As her illness progresses, their bond deepens, and their souls connect. Virginie Efira ("Benedetta") plays Marie-Lou, and Tao Okamoto, a global fashion model who has appeared in Hollywood films like "The Wolverine," plays Mari. Kyozo Nagatsuka ("Enemy") plays Goro Seimiya, an actor in Mari's play, and Koyo Kuroki ("The Generation of the Looking-Ahead") plays Tomoki Kubodera, Goro's grandson. Screened in the Competition section of the 79th Cannes Film Festival in 2026, Virginie Efira and Tao Okamoto jointly won the Best Actress award. Okamoto became the first Japanese person to win the Cannes Best Actress award.
